4 Roof Maintenance Mistakes To Avoid
The roof is one of the most important structures of a house, and it can also be costly to replace or repair if it's not properly cared for. Luckily, there are several things you can do to help prevent damage to your roof so it can last as long as possible. If you are a homeowner, avoid the following common roof mistakes:
Neglecting to Maintain Gutters
The gutters around your roof and the downspouts attached to them play a very important role in your roof's health. Excess moisture is horrible for roofing materials, and gutters are there to quickly remove water efficiently. If you do not keep your gutters clean, it is possible for standing water to build up, which can cause mold and mildew to grow along your roof line. In addition, if gutters are clogged, rainwater or melting snow can pool on your roof and cause damage.
Trying to Fix Leaks Yourself
If you notice that your roof is leaking, it is never a good idea to climb on the roof and begin lifting shingles so you can try to repair the leak yourself. Doing so can cause significant damage to your shingles, and you may end up having to replace them. It is also dangerous to be up on a roof when you don't know what you are doing. If you suspect a roof leak, your best bet is to hire experienced roofing contractors to make the repairs.
Failing to Properly Trim Trees
Trees are a beautiful addition to any yard, but large trees that are near the perimeter of your home can pose a risk to your roof if they are not regularly trimmed. If you have large branches hanging over your roof, they can eventually snap and break or be ripped off a tree during extreme weather and if they land on top of your roof you may be in need of serious repairs. If you want to keep your roof in good condition, make it a point to have large trees trimmed back so there are no large limbs hanging over or near your roof.
Using a Pressure Washer
If leaves and debris have accumulated on your roof, you may be tempted to use a pressure washer to clear the area. Doing so is not a good idea, as pressure washers are much too powerful to use on a roof. While a pressure washer may remove debris quickly, it is also likely to strip the granules from the shingles on your roof.
